Kindness Will Undoubtedly Be Repaid

(친절은 반드시 되돌아 온다)

 

Even if you are only remotely kind to
another person, you will make his/her day.

친절은 지극히 작은 것이라도
상대방을 기쁘고 유쾌하게 한다.


American Arthur Smith said,
if you are nice to others,
you will get unexpected rewards in return.

미국의 아더 스미스는
「당신의 친절이 다른 사람들에게 끼친 유쾌함은
훗날 반드시 당신에게 되돌아올 것이며,
가끔은 이자까지 붙어서 되돌아오기도 할 것이다.」


One night during a very nasty storm,
an older couple went into a small hotel
to rent a room.

폭풍우가 심하게 몰아치던 어느 날 밤,
어떤 노부부가 작은 호텔에 들어와 방을 찾았다.


But, there was no vacancy in the hotel that night.
The old couple stood there with puzzled faces.
There was nothing that they could do except
go back out to the windy streets.

그러나 호텔 방은 이미 만원이었다.
노부부는 바람이 세차게 불어대는 밤거리로
다시 나아가야만 한다는 사실에
무척 난감한 표정을 지으며
우두커니 서 있었다.


There was no other place for the couple to go
because the other hotels were also full.
Then, a young worker approached them and said,
"We're very sorry to make you stay out
in this terrible weather.
If it's okay with you, you can use my room."

다른 호텔들도 모두 만원이었기에
더 이상 갈 곳도 없는 터였습니다.
그때 노부부 앞으로 다가온 볼트라는
젊은 종업원은 방을 구해 드리지 못한 것이
자기의 잘못이라도 되는 것처럼 걱정하면서 말했다.
"이렇게 날씨 사나운 밤에 나이 드신 어른을
마냥 서성이게 해서 죄송합니다. 괜찮으시다면
오늘은 제 방에서 주무십시요."


The old people were hesitant at first,
not wanting to kick the young man out of his room,
but then they decided to take him up on his request.

노부부는 한동안 망설였지만
종업원의 간곡한 권유로 그의 방에서 묵었다.
다음날 아침 노부부는 계산을 하면서 종업원에게
이렇게 말하는 것이었다.


The next morning, the old couple said to
the young man as they paid for their room,
"we'll build the best hotel in the U.S. for you."
The young man answered their unexpected
statement with a quiet smile.

"당신을 위해 미국에서 제일 좋은 호텔을 지어 주겠소."
종업원은 뜻밖에 제의를 받았으나
조용히 웃는 얼굴로 답하였다.


A few years later,
the young man received an invitation
from the old couple.

몇 년이 지난 후 이 젊은 종업원은
노부부로부터 뉴욕으로 초청하는 편지를 받았다.


As soon as he arrived at his destination,
they brought him to the corner of
5th and 34th streets.
Standing there was a huge new building.

종업원이 도착하자 노부부는
웅장한 새 건물이 서 있는 5번가와 34번가가 교차되는
길 모퉁이로 그를 데리고 갔다.


"This is the hotel I promised to build for you",
the old man said. He was William Waldorf Astoria
and this building was the famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

"이것이 바로 내가 당신에게
지어 주기로 약속한 호텔이오."
이 노인은 윌리엄 월토프 아스토였고
바로 그 유명한 월토프 아스토리아 호텔이었다.


It's no doubt that the young man was
appointed to be the first manager of this hotel.

종업원 볼트가 이 호텔의 첫 관리인이
된 것은 두 말할 필요가 없다.
